Improving Care for LGBT Older Adults: A Training for Healthcare Professionals. Lunch will be provided.
LGBT older adults are more likely to live alone, and less likely to have caretakers as their heterosexual and cisgender peers. LGBT older adults are also more likely to be caretakers themselves. They often face discrimination when seeking medical treatment, and many of them go back into the closet when transitioning into long-term care. While New Orleans has one of the highest percentages of LGBT people in the nation, and the Stonewall generation is aging and in need of culturally competent care, healthcare professionals and long-term care facilities have been slow to meet the needs of this population.
This training will focus on the unique biopsychosocial needs of LGBT older adults, and on how healthcare professionals can better serve these patients and their families.
NOTE: We are applying for approval for four hours of continuing education units (CEUs) from NASW-LA. There will be a $12.00 fee for attendees who would like to get CEUs.
